Why did it take more than 1,800 years for the truth to be accepted? The answer lies in human nature.
If you ask a psychologist what reality is, he will answer "Reality is whatever a person perceives their reality to be." That
is because psychologists know that everything we see or hear is actually a re-creation assembled by our brains, from electro-chemical
signals received through connecting nerve fibers from our eyes and ears.
The truth is: ‘reality is that which actually exists,' but our brains don’t always
put things together exactly the way they really are. Sometimes ‘reality’ and an individuals ‘perception
of reality’ are two completely different things.
A human baby is born with no knowledge. The brain must gather knowledge and understanding in order
to properly perceive the world. A child may ask "How did we get here?" and a parent may answer "We evolved from monkeys."
The child may accept this belief because he trusts his parents, and from then on, all of his perceptions will flow through
the filter of his belief that we evolved from monkeys.
Whatever a person believes is true, will always appear to seem true to that person. Tycho Brahe’s
observations seemed to him, to support the Ptolemaic theory, while Kepler proved the opposite with the same observations.
How do we know if our perceptions are true? How do we know if our beliefs are true? If a person
believes in alien abduction, they will perceive events or circumstances to support their belief, even though they were never
actually abducted by an alien. If a person does not believe in aliens, then the believers’ assertions and evidence will
seem absurd to the non-believer’s perception.
When Pythagoras suggested a spherical shaped, rotating world, the idea seemed absurd to those
who already believed in a flat, stationary world. Their belief in a flat world prevented their brains from perceiving
any other possibility. They refused to consider the possibility because of an instant gut reaction. After holding themselves
up as knowledgeable experts for so many years, no one could face the embarrassment of the fact that they had missed something
so simple. The world is spherically shaped and rotates on its own axis. That is why the Sun rises in the east and sets in
the west on a predictable cycle. The flat world thinkers had an invisible guy with a chariot and flying horses dragging the
Sun across the sky each day.
To this day the truth about the true nature of the Universe is yet to be revealed. The advent
of technology and space travel have created as many new questions as they have answered. How many of these un-answered
questions are due to currently held beliefs that may not be true? History shows us that it is absolutely amazing what people
will believe or do, once they’ve rejected the truth. Is the truth still being rejected? Has the real truth ever been
revealed?
From Galileo to our present day, the bearers of many famous names have contributed their theories
and discoveries to Mankind’s overall and semi-mutually agreed upon understanding of the Universe. Consider Newton, Einstein,
Doppler, Fermi, Marconi, Goodyear, Edison, Bell, Ford, Voltaire, Hubble, Lovell, and many, many, others. If their contributions
had not happened, we would still be riding horses on dirt roads today.
