In the 18th and 19th centuries science was finally able to begin freeing itself from church and religious bondage. To defend itself, science has had to build a solid wall between itself and religion. Science deals only with things that can be detected, while religion deals with supernatural spirit realms and magic. Religion had lost its political and civil authority, which is what it feared when it made Galileo recant the truth in exchange for not being burned to death. But it still tries to reach over the wall by stopping science from doing anything that seems to trespass on God’s territory, like stem cell research and human cloning.

     Unfortunately, in building the wall between science and religion, science had to inadvertently create its own religion. If you look here and there, you will find certain things that science believes in that have no evidentiary basis.

     An example is the theory of evolution as the origin of all the diverse species of life found on Earth. When Charles Darwin proposed his theory, he knew that living organisms passed on hereditary traits to their offspring, but he did not know exactly how this was done. Chromosomes had not yet been discovered. Experiments in heredity were being done, and dominant and subdominant traits were observed and categorized, but no one understood the exact mechanism for passing these traits along to offspring.

     He deduced that the small and gradual changes that he was observing in the wildlife he studied, could over vast amounts of time, cause the eventual descendants of an animal to be of a different species of animal than the originals that they had descended from. At that time, the only other explanation for the origin of species was the Bible and the story of creation and Noah and the Ark. Science was trying to completely separate itself from religion, and an alternative explanation was badly needed.

     Supporting evidence seemed to be all around. Animals could be grouped together, such as mammals, reptiles, and birds. Similar looking species had similar looking bone structures. But no evidence can be found that proves that evolution is the reason for all the diverse life forms on Earth. A belief always seems true to those who believe it.

     With the advent of better microscopes and the discovery of chromosomes, Darwin should have been thrown to the scrap heap with Ptolemy. Every different animal or plant species has a different number of chromosomes. Chromosomes are one of the most complicated things in the Universe. Each chromosome contains thousands of genes. Each gene contains millions of bits of data, which is the software that governs the construction and functioning of the organism.

     Humans have 46 chromosomes. Dogs have 78 chromosomes. Carrots have 22 chromosomes. All Chromosomes come in pairs, one from the mother and one from the father. Species that have different numbers of chromosomes cannot cross breed.

     There is no gradual way to go from one even number to the next even number. If all mammals came from a common ancestor, and different mammals have different numbers of chromosome pairs, then at some point, an individual mammal would have to reproduce an offspring that has a different number of chromosomes, and be of a different species. An identical mutation causing a new chromosome to appear, would have to be repeated identically in another individual of the opposite gender, who is nearby, in order for the new species to reproduce. In any event, there can be no gradual change from one species to another. The change would have to be sudden, in one generation.

     This could very well be exactly what happens. Or not, but whatever it is, it is not evolution. Dr. Carl Sagan produced a television series called "Cosmos" in which he narrated various explanations for natural phenomena. In one episode he went to a Japanese island where fisherman were catching crabs. Some of the crabs had a distinct marking on their shell that resembled the characature of a Ninja warrior. For the last 300 years, the fisherman had been throwing them back if they looked like ninjas. Dr. Sagan proclaimed this as evidence of proof of evolution. Artificial selection had caused some of the crabs to evolve a shell that looked like a ninja.
